Enhancing ecosystem services in apple orchards: Nest boxes increase pest control by insectivorous birds

چکیده
Ecological intensification in croplands aims to enhance biodiversity-based ecosystem services, helping increase yield while reducing agricultural environmental impacts. Identifying ecological tools of wide applicability and easily implemented by farmers is, therefore, an imperative. Here, we verify the efficiency provisioning artificial nest boxes for insectivorous birds reinforce pest biological control apple orchards. The study was conducted 24 cider-apple orchards Asturias (NW Spain) over 3 years. We compared effect between with without occupied different bird species, through insectivory estimates based on attack a sentinel measurements arthropod abundance trees. also identified preys that species captured feed nestlings. Bird occupancy widespread, ranging 25.0%–33.3% each year. Great tit dominant followed blue and, occasionally, common redstart. Predation pressure pests increased boxes, as judged proportion models attacked (34.9% 2018 41.1% 2019), decreased biomass tree-dwelling arthropods (?51.7%) reduced probability occurrence (from 57% 40%), boxes. Nesting showed predatory roles Fewer attacks but lower associated rather than great tit. Besides, fed nestlings at faster rate included their diet higher tit, which preyed mostly other herbivorous insects. Synthesis applications. demonstrated usefulness enhancing regional scale, identifying complementary predators herbivores. From farmers' perspective, providing may represent efficient, easy implement, cheap attractive measure intensification, compatible actions fostering biodiversity croplands.

Great Tits (Parus major) Reduce Caterpillar Damage in Commercial Apple Orchards
Alternative ways to control caterpillar pests and reduce the use of pesticides in apple orchards are in the interest of the environment, farmers and the public. Great tits have already been shown to reduce damage under high caterpillar density when breeding in nest boxes in an experimental apple orchard. We tested whether this reduction also occurs under practical conditions of Integrated Pest ...

Regulation of agricultural pests managing their natural enemies represents an alternative to chemical pesticides. We assessed the potential of insectivorous birds as pest regulators in woody crops located in central Spain. A total of 417 nest boxes installed in five field study sites (one vineyard, two fruit orchards, and two olive groves) were monitored for use and breeding of insectivorous bi...
متن کاملAvian Conservation Practices Strengthen Ecosystem Services in California Vineyards
Insectivorous Western Bluebirds (Sialia mexicana) occupy vineyard nest boxes established by California winegrape growers who want to encourage avian conservation. Experimentally, the provision of available nest sites serves as an alternative to exclosure methods for isolating the potential ecosystem services provided by foraging birds. We compared the abundance and species richness of avian for...
متن کاملIntegrated pest management approach for a new pest, Lacanobia subjuncta (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae), in Washington apple orchards.
Bioassays of Lacanobia subjuncta (Grote and Robinson) larvae established baseline LC50 values and identified the potential of reduced-risk, organophosphate replacement and naturally derived insecticides (eg chloronicotinyls, spinosyns, oxadiazines, insect growth regulators, microbial insecticides and particle films) to control this pest. The toxicities of these products were compared with those...
متن کاملBird use of organic apple orchards: Frugivory, pest control and implications for production
As the largest terrestrial biomes, crop and pasturelands can have very large positive or negative impacts on biodiversity and human well-being. Understanding how animals use and impact agroecosystems is important for making informed decisions that achieve conservation and production outcomes. Yet, few studies examine the tradeoffs associated with wildlife in agricultural systems. We examined bi...
